Three Georgian terraces opposite Campbelltown Mall on Queen Street Campbelltown are set to be sold at auction later this year.
The buildings – 288, 292 and 298 Queen Street – are almost 200 years old and were added to the state heritage register in April, 1999.
Tim Knapp from Knapp Property Group is in charge of the sale and told the Advertiser there would be few opportunities in his lifetime to sell buildings of such historic value.
“Very few opportunities present themselves such as these,” he said.
“I am the sixth generation of my family – dating back to Robert Lack – to work In Campbelltown. My family were around when these buildings were constructed.
“It is a privilege to be doing business in the same halls that my ancestors may have done so all those years ago.”
The Georgian terraces were constructed about 1840 and have remained stand-out structures in the CBD ever since.
The Office of Environment and Heritage website lists the buildings as “among the first to be acquired and restored by the state government for the purpose of conserving the state’s environmental heritage and therefore represent an impact landmark in the history of conservation”.
Mr Knapp said the properties were converted into “modern commercial office space” in recent years.
“The strip of buildings are some of the best maintained Georgian buildings in Australia,” he said.
“They have been standing for more than 175 years, but inside you could never tell, because of the modern fit-out.
“They are very significant to Campbelltown’s history.”
The buildings are currently owned by the Benevolent Society and are being sold because the company has “outgrown the space”.
The Benevolent Society is expected to remain as a tenant for a short time after the sale.
All three properties will be sold individually at an on-site auction on Thursday, November 1 from 11am.
“The best price on the day will secure each building,” Mr Knapp said.
“This is a great chance to invest in Campbelltown’s history.
“The modern office fit-out and original exposed sandstone walls are one of a kind.
“They are unique in their own way and will be a great home for someone’s business.”
Mr Knapp said there were “only a handful of buildings” of the same age remaining intact in Australia today.
He said the terraces had made a lasting impression in Campbelltown.
“The buildings form an historic precinct within the city mall,” Mr Knapp said.
“The three two-storey colonial houses of brick and sandstone make a major contribution to the streetscape.
“They all date from the mid-19th century and all feature some fine work on balustrades, columns, windows and doors.
“The property on 298 Queen Street is said to have been a staging post for Cobb and Co, 292 was Legacy House and 288-90 was the Old Railway Hotel, converted to a music hall in the 1850s.”
